National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence

The seventh National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence will be held on Friday 17 March, 2017.

This is the largest anti – bullying event for the community, encouraging more individuals to take a stand against bullying and violence in their surroundings.

This festival brings home the lesson of spiritual and social harmony!

Holi is a spring festival in India and Nepal and for many a festive day to meet others, play and laugh, forget and forgive and is also celebrated as a thanksgiving for a good harvest.

People throw colors on each other and celebrate Holi. The celebration witnesses the feeling of oneness.

World Glaucoma week March 5-11

Over 300,000 Australians have glaucoma. While it is more common as people grow older, it can occur at any age. As our population becomes older, the proportion of glaucoma patients is increasing.

World Glaucoma week is held in March each year to raise awareness about glaucoma as a potentially blinding eye disease and to stress the importance of regular optic nerve checks. This is an issue which needs to be stressed as glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide.

World Kidney Day aims to raise awareness of the importance of our kidneys to our overall health and to reduce the frequency and impact of kidney disease worldwide. The theme for 2017 is kidney disease and obesity, designed to outline the grave impact of obesity on developing a high risk of Chronic Kidney Disease.

NSW Seniors Festival is the largest festival for seniors in the Southern Hemisphere, reaching up to 500,000 seniors each year. It gives you a chance to make new friends or get together with old ones at an array of local community events.

NSW Seniors Festival is designed to celebrate the role seniors play and the contributions they make to the NSW community.

This is especially important with the proportion of people aged 65 years and over increasing from 12.0% to 15.3% between 1996 and 2016.

Family Drug Support Day

 

 

The National Family Drug Support Day aims to raise awareness of the services and the help that is needed for families to reduce the discrimination surrounding drug users and promote harm – reduction strategies.

The theme for 2017, ‘see the person not the drug’ allows societies to look beyond the stigma of drug use.

“The 2014 National Survey on Drug Use and Health found that 21.5 million people aged 12 and older had a substance use disorder in the previous year; however, sadly only 2.5 million received the specialized treatment they needed.”

Ovarian Cancer Awareness

Ovarian Cancer Month is held in February to raise awareness of ovarian cancer.

With no early detection test, it is so important that women know the signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer and their family history.

Some signs and symptoms include

  • Abdominal or pelvic pain
  • Increased abdominal size or persistent abdominal bloating
  • Needing to urinate often or urgently.
  • Feeling full after eating a small amount

This February you can participate through events such as the afternoon teal campaign, teal ribbon day on the 24th of February, hosting your own afternoon tea.
