World Autism Awareness Day 2nd April 2017

 

World Autism Awareness Day is a worldwide initiative aiming to increase understanding of the disability. Autism is a development disorder that impairs social interaction, communication and behaviour.

“Studies have identified that 1 in 68 children have autism spectrum disorder.” (1 in 42 boys and 1 in 189 girls)

National Smile Day 1 April 2017

National Smile Day is the Humour Foundation’s annual fundraising campaign that allows the public to be involved in raising funds and helping sick children SMILE in hospitals around Australia. Together we can reveal the power of a SMILE.

Research conducted around the world has provided evidence of the physiological and psychological benefits of laughter to health and well-being.

March into Yellow – Endometriosis Australia

‘March into yellow’ is a campaign designed to raise awareness for women with endometriosis. Endometriosis is a common disease in which the tissue that is similar to the lining of the womb grows outside it in other parts of the body.

“10% of women suffer with endometriosis at some point in their life with the disease often starting in teenagers.”

National Epilepsy Awareness Month

National Epilepsy Awareness Month

Throughout March, Epilepsy Australia is urging people around the country to end the stigma and discrimination of epilepsy and ‘GO PURPLE’, the international colour for epilepsy. Epilepsy is a common brain disorder which takes the form of recurring seizures.

“An estimated 65 million worldwide currently live with epilepsy – in Australia alone approximately 250,000 people live with epilepsy and one in 25 people will have epilepsy at some point in their life.”

  • Hosting a purple day fundraiser
  • Buying merchandise which donates money to epilepsy Australia

Coeliac Awareness Week

Coeliac Awareness Week is a campaign which aims to reach the many thousands of Australians unaware they are living with coeliac disease and help them identify the symptoms and take steps towards diagnosis and treatment.

“Coeliac disease is a serious medical illness, affecting 1 in 70 of the population. However, 80 per cent of affected Australians remain undiagnosed.”

National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence

The seventh National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence will be held on Friday 17 March, 2017.

This is the largest anti – bullying event for the community, encouraging more individuals to take a stand against bullying and violence in their surroundings.

“46 percent of males followed by 26 percent of females have admitted to being victims of bullying and violence as reported by the Bureau of Justice”

World Glaucoma week March 5-11

Over 300,000 Australians have glaucoma. While it is more common as people grow older, it can occur at any age. As our population becomes older, the proportion of glaucoma patients is increasing.

World Glaucoma week is held in March each year to raise awareness about glaucoma as a potentially blinding eye disease and to stress the importance of regular optic nerve checks. This is an issue which needs to be stressed as glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide.

“One in eight Australians over 80 will develop glaucoma with 50% of these cases being undiagnosed”

World Kidney Day aims to raise awareness of the importance of our kidneys to our overall health and to reduce the frequency and impact of kidney disease worldwide. The theme for 2017 is kidney disease and obesity, designed to outline the grave impact of obesity on developing a high risk of Chronic Kidney Disease.

International Women’s Day

International Women Day celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievement of women around the world. The theme for 2017 is ‘BE BOLD FOR CHANGE’, highlighting the importance of a better working world or more specifically a gender – exclusive world.

NSW Seniors Festival is the largest festival for seniors in the Southern Hemisphere, reaching up to 500,000 seniors each year. It gives you a chance to make new friends or get together with old ones at an array of local community events.

NSW Seniors Festival is designed to celebrate the role seniors play and the contributions they make to the NSW community.

This is especially important with the proportion of people aged 65 years and over increasing from 12.0% to 15.3% between 1996 and 2016.

Participate this senior’s week by:

  • Attending the Premier’s Gala Concerts and raising funds for seniors
