National Domestic Violence Remembrance Day 7 May

 

National Domestic Violence Remembrance Day is an initiative to honour those who have been victims and survivors of Domestic and Family Violence. The theme for 2017 is ‘don’t be silent but speak up and obtain support’. Unfortunately domestic and family violence is not always reported to police and there are still some concerning statistics surrounding Domestic and Family Violence:

“85% of domestic violence victims are women”

Get involved this May by:

  • Attending the Domestic Violence remembrance breakfast
  • Volunteering
  • Raising awareness on social media
  • Showing your support in the community
  • you can donate to several organisations, which are involved in assisting the victims in various ways. Donate generously.

The Starlight Day May 5

 

The Starlight Day is a national campaign involving the painting of streets to Power the Happy for seriously ill children. The Starlight Children’s Foundation has brightened the lives of seriously ill and hospitalised children, and their families, throughout Australia.

Research shows sick kids and teens face different challenges to adult patients and are entitled to play, imagine and dream so they can continue to develop physically, mentally and socially.”

You can contribute by getting involved this May by:

  • Raising awareness on social media
  • Donating to the foundation and helping them reach their goal of $1.3 million
  • Volunteering with the organisation
  • Holding a fundraiser to raise money for the cause

Kiss Goodbye to MS

Kiss Goodbye to MS is a campaign designed to accelerate research targeting the prevention, better treatments and a cure for multiple sclerosis. Ultimately, MS Research Australia is working towards freedom from MS. Multiple sclerosis is a condition of the central nervous system, interfering with nerve impulses within the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves.

MS affects over 23,000 in Australia and more than two million diagnosed worldwide.”

World Day for Safety and Health at Work is an international campaign to promote safe and healthy work ethics. These are crucial in moving ahead in our fast paced society to maintain quality of life and working standards.

Every year some two million men and women lose their lives through accidents and diseases linked to their work.”

End Malaria For Good 25 April

World Malaria Day is a chance to shine a spotlight on the global effort to control malaria. The theme for 2017 is ‘END MALARIA FOR GOOD’ and highlights the need for continued investment and sustained political commitment for malaria prevention and control. Malaria remains both a major cause and a consequence of global poverty and inequity.

“According to the World Malaria Report 2016, in 2015, there were 212 million new cases of malaria and 429,000 deaths. One child dies from malaria every two minutes.”

World Haemophilia Day

World Haemophilia Day is a campaign designed to bring attention to the women and girls in our community who live with a bleeding disorder. Haemophilia is a genetic bleeding disorder that prevents the blood from clotting normally.  

“Currently in Australia there are more than 2,700 people with varied degrees of severity of haemophilia.”

Youth Homelessness Matters Day 15 April

Youth Homelessness Matters Day sheds light on the issue of youth homelessness as it continues to affect thousands of teenagers around the nation. Youth homelessness is a national disgrace.

More than 26, 000 young Australians do not have a home. In most instances, they do not have a home because they are escaping conflict and violence. They find it almost impossible to find a home because of the housing affordability crisis in Australia.”

Pause For Parkinson 11 April

 

Parkinson’s is a progressive neurological disorder that affects a person’s control of their body movements.  The disease is degenerating and often life threatening, requiring an immediate stop. This April, the Shake It Up Australia foundation is promoting and raising funds for the Parkinson’s disease.

World Allergy Week is an initiative addressing the need for greater awareness and understanding of allergy topics as well as the treatment and quality of life issues related to patients.
