Australia is recognized as an outdoor loving country, but it’s also known for the harsh sun and high cases of Melanoma. Overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) light causes 95% of melanoma. The best way to prevent melanoma is to protect your skin from the sun by following sun safe practices.
- In 2020, an estimated 16,221 new cases of melanoma will be diagnosed in Australia, and 1,375 people will die from this disease.
- In 2013–14, there were 23,437 melanoma-related hospitalisations in Australia, a 63% rise from 2002–03.
- In 2020, an estimated 2.9% of all cancer diagnoses will be from melanoma.
